Volunteer Teaching in Ghana

Known as one of Africa’s largest producers of gold, Ghana has long been a country of exploration and discovery – so where better to explore your shiny new talents as a volunteer teacher?

Within our programme, you will be placed in one of the local schools and will be responsible for teaching students a range of subjects, including, of course, English. However, the teachers are very receptive to new and exciting ways of learning, and you are encouraged to bring your own materials if you wish!

New To Teaching? This is the Programme for You!

… and if you’re new to teaching, don’t worry! You will be working alongside local school teachers, assisting with lesson planning and delivery, and adding fun to the children’s schooldays. The children are generally a very happy bunch – and love finding out about their new volunteers, where they come from and how they live, so you’ll always have plenty to talk about!

Explore Accra’s Vibrant African Culture

Our accommodation is located in Teshie, a coastal suburban town on the east side of Accra. It is a quickly growing suburb that’s getting bigger and bigger every day. With its own train station, Teshie is the perfect base camp to explore the many gems that Accra has to offer.

After your school day, you will be free to relax back at the centre with new friends, or to explore Ghana’s varied terrain from savannah and woodlands and lagoons, as well as its modern cities and tiny villages. Locals are very welcoming here, so you will find your placement as a volunteer teacher in Ghana a memorable and exciting experience!

Trip Accommodation

Accra is the capital and largest city in Ghana, with a population of over two million. It stretches along the Ghanaian Atlantic coast and extends north, with many bustling towns and villages along the way.

Our accommodation is located in Teshie, a coastal suburban town on the east side of Accra. It is a quickly growing suburb that’s getting bigger and bigger every day. Teshie is rich in its diversity and has its own train station for easy transport to many of Ghana’s landmarks and places of natural beauty.

About the Accommodation

Safety is our top priority, and our Centre in Accra is located within a gated community, with dorm-style separate male/female accommodation. The programs are located between 20 to 40 minutes from the centre and transportation is readily available (all transport is extra).

And if you’re coming by yourself for the first time, you won’t be alone! There will always be other volunteers to spend time with, and there are staff on-site 7 days a week to help you. Wifi is limited, so we recommend you purchase your own SIM card to help stay connected with friends and family.

Food Arrangements

If you haven’t tried Ghanaian cuisine, you’re in for treat!  Typical Ghanaian food includes rice dishes, beans, fruits, vegetables, chicken, beef, and fish with its own African spices.  At our centre, you’ll find a mix of Ghanaian and Western food to enjoy, with all meals, tea, coffee, and filtered water included in your stay. There are 3 meals during the week and 2 meals on weekends.

Facilities

Our Volunteer Centre is close to all amenities with the closest shops within a 15-20 minute walk. ATMs are 15 minutes away by taxi, and restaurants and bars (including Wifi cafes) are a 20-minute taxi ride from the centre.
