There’s no better way to put your skills and knowledge to use! Gain invaluable and practical psychology experience at this special centre. You can make a big difference to these Children’s lives through daily psychotherapy sessions at this Special Needs center in Peru. Join this internship program at a local children’s home and help increase their independence and mental strength!
Get involved in this special home for children (and a few adults) with physical and mental disabilities. This program is for those who are looking to work with children that require a higher level of care and assistance.
You will be taking care of roughly 30 children as well as assisting the program staff with daily tasks. Many of these children have been raised in this home after losing their parents, and your care and attention will be well received by them!
Activities you can look forward to helping them with include therapy sessions, educational lessons, dancing lessons and outdoor activity. There will also be some time during the day where you will work individually or with a small group of children and follow the routine of a trained professional in your specific field. Here you will have the opportunity to learn and practice psychotherapy under their guidance.
For a field as specified and intimate as psychology it is highly preferred that the participant have both academic and some professional experience in the field of psychology. This is not only for the protection of the participant but for the well-being of the patient.
The main goal of the organisation is to maximise what these children can do on their own, with the hope that one day they are able to get jobs and live fulfilling lives!
Monday – Friday
In your first week, an introduction meeting will inform you about the project, its staff and the active role you will play during your stay. Aiming to help you settle in quickly, you’ll also meet your manager and the children you will be working with.
Each day you will work between 4 and 5 hours at the home. Because the children attend school in the morning, the program will be based more in the afternoon. You’ll interact and assist the local staff in their various routines around the centre from around lunch till dinner time, and will especially be expected to contribute in Psychotherapy sessions.
An accurate schedule of your working day will be given to you on your arrival at the location as it will depend on the needs of the home and the children. However, when you are not directly involved in assigned tasks, you will be expected to spend quality time interacting with the children.
***This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.***
