Take a hands-on approach to conserving and raising China’s endangered sea turtles. Based in Huidong city, this turtle conservation project helps to protect its local sea turtles, all the while providing you with scenic ocean views and a relaxing beach holiday in your down time.
By helping to maintain the environment, raise hatchlings, take part in the breeding program as well as releasing turtles back into the wild, you will be helping to protect these cute little sea creatures and learn more about the 6 different species of sea turtle that live in China.
Working together with local staff, you have the hands-on experience of helping these endangered sea turtles of china re-populate their natural habitat – a project to be proud of!
The sea turtle reserve is the only natural sea turtle breeding program in China, and is located in a beautiful town next to the sea. While you are here you will have the opportunity to meet local residents, students and other professionals involved in the sea turtle conservation project. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the local Chinese culture and develop friendships with local Chinese people.
This project is the perfect opportunity for animal lovers who want sun, sand and to make a difference with these special marine creatures in an exotic and fascinating country full of rich culture history and steeped in interesting traditions. It’s the perfect blend of a cultural, meaningful and enjoyable getaway.
Through the turtle conservation program you will work with local people on a daily basis to perform a wide range of duties, including net cleaning, feeding and working on educational programs which help to build awareness around the importance of sea turtle conservation. On occasion, you may be asked to assist in scientific research and through rubbish collection, improve the state of the beach.
The week begins on Monday morning, where you will take the bus to Huidong turtle reserve from Shengzhen. On arrival you will receive an introduction to the work assignment you will be undertaking. In the afternoon you will head to the turtle museum to observe the different turtle species and their living habitats. The evening includes ice breaker and team building exercises.
On day two you will receive a tour of the turtle base from the local workers. Throughout the morning you will begin preparing the turtle’s food and assist in the feeding, as well as take part in cleaning the turtle pool. In the evening will be a sharing time after your first day with the turtles!
On Wednesday morning we head out early to Shilong Bay to enjoy the sunrise, stopping for a Shiling bay cleaning on the way. In the afternoon we will walk to Qian’ao beach and visit the Guangkou local market to collect the ingredients for this evenings barbeque night!
On Thursday morning we visit the Double-moon bay platform, then spend the afternoon working with sea turtle keepers – this might mean cleaning, feeding, or otherwise caring for the turtles. In the evening we will have a sharing followed by a movie night.
Friday is your final day with the turtles, and you spend the first part of the day preparing food, feeding and cleaning the pool for the turtles. We will close up with a final meeting in the evening, followed by a transfer to Shenzhen, from there you will depart Shenzhen by 11am the following (Saturday) morning.
