Spend your time in Malawi contributing to Mangochi’s sustainability and conservation efforts, and really know you’ve made a difference. In the environmental conservation program, you will get to experience life as one of the villagers, working with local communities to increase sustainability awareness, counter the effects of climate change and working in a tree nursery campaign.
You will gain invaluable life skills through this conservation program that will be with you for life, at the same time you’ll get to be involved in the important and ongoing campaign for sustainability in Mangochi. This program emphasises education in the tree nursery campaign, as this is the first step to help counter unsustainable practices and climate change.
A typical day on this program involves planting nursery-raised trees around the village in community centers such as schools, local markets, and clinics. The nursery is also a centre for local villagers who would like to learn how to build and grow their own tree nursery or garden at home. You can help with these efforts through planning and offering lessons on topics like recycling, reducing carbon footprints and the effects of climate change.
Each day the plan for the day is decided in the morning meeting, so no two days will be the same. Each day will begin with breakfast at the center, followed by activities. You can expect to spend 4 to 5 hours working each day. A typical day during this program could look like…
Breakfast at the Center
Morning meeting to make the plan for the day
Lead a presentation or small group workshop
Tree planting around the local community
Back to the center for dinner and to share your experiences
