English Teaching Volunteer in Mozambique
Get on board this life changing program and help to improve the English language skills of the Mozambique youth. This is the perfect program if you love teaching and being around children, all the while exploring the sights and culture of a fascinating African nation like Mozambique.
You will be working with local teachers and community leaders in the district of Xai Xai to provide English learning programs in the local village hall. An exciting program for many children who often don’t get the chance to practice English anywhere else. You will help to educate the children through handicrafts, colouring, drawing, sports, writing, games and many other fun activities! Many of the children are quite young, and so enjoy extra attention and stimulating activities to help with their own learning and growth.
This once-in-a-lifetime experience will provide you with insight into both the local cultures as well as a different education system, and also provide you with the invaluable life skill of teaching experience.
Aims & Objectives
- Improve the English language of the youth of Mozambique
- Give the children more chances at conversing in English
- Provide you with insight into a different education system
- Provide you with teaching experience, an invaluable life skill!
The schedule for this program is largely decided through meetings with the local teachers, daily lesson planning and the changing needs of the children and area. You can expect to work for 4-5 hours a day on this program, teaching, leading groups, creating lesson plans and content for the classes.
A typical weekday (Monday to Friday) will usually fit within the following structure:
Teaching at the school
Teaching a non-formal English class in the community or at the school
Preparing activities for next day
Feel free to bring along your own teaching materials. The children love to experience new things, and items such as games, colour pencils, erasers, English language books will be very much loved and appreciated! We recommend you also bring pictures or other small objects representing your country of origin, these items help to teach the curious children about your own country and culture, and can even be turned into an educational lesson.
This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
You will be staying in a local village located just outside Xai Xai, the capital of the Gaza Province. Mozambique is a country with a 1,000km long coastline adjacent to the Indian Ocean in Southeastern Africa. It is bordered by South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
In 1500, the Portuguese established posts up and down the coast, starting with present day Ilha de Mozambique, where the Portuguese operated spice and slave routes from Mozambique up until 1891.
Following the end of World War 1, Portuguese investment in commercial, industrial, agricultural, educational, transportation, and health care infrastructure for the indigenous population started providing for better social and economic possibilities. This continued up to the country’s independence in 1975. The country is generally a low-lying plateau broken up by 25 rivers flowing into the Indian Ocean. The largest is the Zambezi, which provides access to central Africa. Mountain chains in the country’s interior form the backbone of the country.
Wildlife in the country’s national parks is attracting many visitors as it does in the neighbouring countries. Mozambique is known for its vibrant culture, a blend of African and Portuguese influences that translates into a fantastic music scene and excellent cuisine. There is something for everyone on offer here. Why not let yourself take it all in whilst taking part in one of our amazing volunteering experiences, which will help you develop personal skills that you will keep and use for the rest of your life.
