Immerse yourself in China with the Gap volunteer Au Pair Programme. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to truly experience Chinese culture. You will get the chance to explore this vast and exotic country and develop your Chinese language skills through activities, excursions and making new friends.
In this programme, you will spend your time learning, teaching and experiencing the culture while being paid a stipend. Room and board will be provided by your host family. They will take care of you, while you help them practice conversational English and undertake basic childcare and housework tasks.
The Au Pair Programme is a homestay opportunity that offers 18-29-year-old people from around the world a unique, close-up look at Chinese life and culture. You will live with a Chinese family where you’ll develop friendships that will last a lifetime.
Before undertaking this project, it’s important to check that you fit the participant requirements. In addition to the following, you will need to be young, open-minded, positive and mature.
Main Benefits Included in the Program:
Monday to Friday
The standard lengths of the China Au Pair Programme are three, six and 12 months. However other programme lengths are occasionally available and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
As a participant in this programme you will be committing to 30-35 hours/week, an average of five-six hours/day – including the spent teaching English to your host family. You will receive either two days or one and a half days off per week. Depending on the family’s lifestyle, these days may not fall on weekends, however, you will receive one weekend (both Saturday and Sunday) off once per month, and earn three additional days holiday for every three months of the programme completed.
In addition to your homestay arrangement, you will be provided with six hours a week of Chinese classes, arranged around the work schedule with your host family (this will vary depending on the family’s own schedule).
You will be helping your hosts, especially the child or children with foreign language practice and homework, basic childcare and light housework. Various monthly activities include trips to monuments or interesting places, hikes, and celebrations.
