Hill Tribe Immersion Experience Akha Village Thailand
The Hill Tribe Immersion experience is one of the most diverse programs offered, and takes place in one of Thailand’s most beautiful spots. The visit to the northern Hill Tribe community will be one that you are unlikely to forget. The Akha people are a minority group in Thailand who experience various disadvantages; however, they have a distinct culture which you will be able to spend time coming to learn and appreciate.
- Helping with construction projects
- Maintaining agriculture
- Establishing better water access
- Maintaining culture and language through education
- Experimenting with farming methods
We are delighted to be able to offer this incredibly opportunity for travellers to experience the Akha community’s way of life. What follows is a basic breakdown of the types of activities and experiences you can expect to take part in.
Begin Sunday at your accommodation in Singburi; explore the city a little bit before retiring for dinner, and then an overnight journey from Singburi Bus Station to Chiang Rai.
Travel to the Hill Tribe’s village from Chiang Rai; you will visit the local dam where you’ll be free to swim and relax. You will also eat breakfast and lunch at the dam. After that, you will head to an Akha village and a holy place before having dinner in the evening.
Start Tuesday with breakfast before heading off to do some construction work at the Akha Hill Tribe village. After lunch you will have a session where you will learn the community’s language, followed by a visit to the local market.
Start Wednesday with breakfast before trekking into the jungle. Eat lunch in the jungle. After lunch you will have a chance to visit a natural hot spa or kayak on the lake.
On Thursday you will visit a homestay in the Akha Tribe’s village. You’ll explore the local area and learn about the local culture before spending the night in the homestay.
On Friday you will start with breakfast before heading out to teach in a local school. In the afternoon you will then have a chance to try your hand at cooking the local cuisine and then you’ll take part in a cultural exchange. In the evening you will have dinner followed by a goodbye party.
Start Saturday with Brunch before travelling back to Chiang Rai; once there you will take part in a city tour before having dinner. After the meal you will go back to the Eco-House in Singburi or back to Bangkok, from either of which you are free to continue your travels. If you are staying for longer than 1 week then its time to relax and enjoy your weekend.
(Schedule: during the evening times the volunteers are generally free, and no program activities are scheduled. During this time they can explore and visit local attractions. Program advisers will be happy to make recommendations for experiences that travellers are likely to enjoy.)
**Please note; This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.**

From trekking in the beautiful mountains of the north to enjoying the glorious beaches in the south and experiencing the hustle and bustle of the metropolis that is Bangkok, Thailand is certainly not a country that lacks variety.
Whilst it really is at the heart of Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, its cultural identity remains very unique. As the only country in Southeast Asia to avoid European powers, the Thai are proud to refer to themselves as ‘The Land of the Free’ and many tourists might also know it as ‘The Land of Smiles’ due to its friendly people.
