Our healthcare education initiative is in its infancy and requires the skills of both established medical and healthcare professionals and those interested in teaching basic first aid and hygiene. This need for having volunteers on either end of the medical spectrum arises due to the great extremes in hygiene and health practices. Apart from needing qualified professionals in order to conduct health camps and dental checkups, we also need participants who can educate people in the areas of basic first aid and personal hygiene. This works towards the prevention of many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases.
This program is geared towards a more casual variant of volunteer that can still bring valuable medical knowledge to those who are less aware. The people of Indonesia have unique hygiene practices, some of which are incredibly positive but also some that are incredibly negative. While imposing western hygiene beliefs is not our goal, it is important to remember that there are some universal truths when it comes to ensuring that you maintain your health in any way possible. For example, something as simple as washing your hands or thoroughly washing your clothes often are sometimes forgotten concepts to children and some adults.
It is impossible to dictate step by step what your schedule will be as the program is very dynamic and is constantly shifting based upon several factors, such as the experiences and input of the volunteers and the knowledge actually adopted by students.
During your time here in Indonesia, you will be involving yourself with the program coordinator to build lesson plans that educate children in basic hygiene. The main goal is to design these in such a way that children will learn and adopt therefore improving their general health significantly on a daily basis. Some lessons you may be participating in involve the basics of washing your hands properly, how to brush your teeth properly, and how to take care of your clothing when cleaning (as well as how often to clean). Frugal and adaptive knowledge of cleanliness is an absolute bonus for this program as you will likely be working with children who do not have access to your average hygiene products and only possess the basics (if that). Adapting helpful hygiene habits to accommodate the situations of the children is an absolute must.
